Joy Chen is a London-based performance designer working across theatre, film and exhibition. From recently worked as a Design Studio Assistant at the National Theatre till June 2026.

Joy trained in Set Design at the Shanghai Theatre Academy and Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, where she received the John Elvery Award. Her graduation production, Holes, premiered at the Wardrobe Theatre before being invited to the 10th Wuzhen Theatre Festival.

Drawing on her experience across the UK and China, Joy creates visually distinctive work shaped by bold metaphors, imaginative spatial ideas and a thoughtful understanding of audience and narrative.
